Frequently Asked Questions

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Paste any YouTube video URL (youtube.com/watch?v=... or youtu.be/...) into the input field and click Get Thumbnails. The highest available resolution will appear as a preview. Choose your preferred size from the table and click Download to save it, or View to open it full-size in a new tab.
What resolutions are available?
YouTube provides thumbnails in five standard sizes: Maximum (1280×720) — maxresdefault.jpg, Standard (640×480) — sddefault.jpg, High Quality (480×360) — hqdefault.jpg, Medium Quality (320×180) — mqdefault.jpg, and Default (120×90) — default.jpg. Not all videos have a 1280×720 thumbnail — older or lower-quality uploads may only go up to 480×360.
Why is Max Resolution (1280×720) not available for some videos?
YouTube only generates the maxresdefault.jpg (1280×720) thumbnail for videos originally uploaded in HD quality. Older videos, low-resolution uploads, and some live stream recordings may not have this size. The tool automatically falls back to the next available resolution for the preview and marks unavailable sizes in the table.
Does this work for YouTube Shorts?
No — this tool does not support YouTube Shorts. Shorts use a different URL structure (youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID) and a different thumbnail format. If you paste a Shorts URL, the tool will show an error. A dedicated Shorts thumbnail downloader is planned as a separate tool.
Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?
YouTube thumbnails are publicly accessible images served by YouTube's own servers. Downloading them for personal use — referencing a video in a presentation, creating a review article, or research — is generally acceptable. However, thumbnails may be protected by the video creator's copyright. Do not use downloaded thumbnails commercially without the creator's explicit permission.
Is my data sent to FindBeam's servers?
No. Your URL is processed entirely in your browser to extract the video ID. The thumbnail images are loaded directly from YouTube's servers (img.youtube.com). FindBeam's servers are not involved in fetching or storing any thumbnails or URLs.
Is this tool free?
Yes. FindBeam's YouTube Thumbnail Downloader is completely free with no account, no registration, and no usage limits. It will remain free.
